MB Games Vectrex [unboxed]
The Vectrex is one of those odd machines that surfaced before the industry really knew what it was. Manufacturers were looking for ways to make their machine stand out of the crowd and the Vectrex certainly does.
The machine comes with it's own built in monitor and is the only games machine ever to be solely based on vector graphics. The monitor was not the same as a conventional CRT TV of the time - instead having more in common with an oscilloscope. The graphics were drawn directly to the screen via electron beam and the beam was controlled by the game. While this made 3D effect graphics easy for the Vectrex, too many lines on screen would lead to flicker and the game slowing down. Games also game with overlays which were placed over the top of the monochrome screen to add a bit of colour to the game play.
The Vectrex also came complete with an analogue controller as standard - which was very good for the time. I brought this from ebay with a number of boxed games. |
